The Quarterbacks in the Philadelphia-Carolina game both had lousy finishes. Donovan McNabb suffered broken ribs while running into the end zone midway through the fourth quarter of a game they were winning 31-10. Why would you have your QB running at that point in the game? Sure the hit was a bit late but the game was over, don’t put your Quarterback in harm’s way. Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid states that he thinks McNabb can play this week, but Kevin Kolb will take most of the reps in practice and the Eagles signed QB Jeff Garcia on Monday. Garcia was released by Oakland this preseason and played for the Eagles in 2006, so he does know the system. Jake Delhomme was a different story. He was just terrible on Sunday. Four interceptions and a lost fumble will lead to a lot of discussion about replacing him at starter for this week’s game versus Atlanta. This was a continuation of the playoff game that ended the Panthers season in 2008 where he also threw four interceptions. Delhomme never had the greatest of arm strength to begin with, but was always right on target with his throws. If he can no longer be precise with his throws, than it may be time for him to go. Problem is the Panthers gave him $20 million in guaranteed money this spring, so he may have a longer leash than he deserves. The Panthers are hedging their bets however as they have signed AJ Feeley to put the pressure on Delhomme.

The Steelers may have won their opening game last Thursday, but if the offensive line doesn’t improve, not only won’t Willie Parker have any room to run, but Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger won’t make it through the season. I know Ben is big and can take a hit, but you don’t want to be getting hit by 280-320 pound defensive players all that often.

Doesn’t surprise me one bit that the Dolphins offense was anemic on Sunday. They have been trying all preseason to find a receiver to play opposite Ted Ginn. Problem is Ginn is not a number one receiver. He is more of a number two. There just aren’t any playmakers in Miami.

I’m not sure which group of fans to talk off a ledge first, Cincinnati or Buffalo. A fluke deflection led to Wide Receiver Brandon Stokely’s long game winning touchdown on Sunday, while Buffalo just choked and allowed two touchdowns in just over a minute to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on Monday. New England looked out of sync on offense all game before coming alive in the fourth quarter. I guess Wes Welker is just fine as he caught 12 passes for 93 yards. Laurence Maroney and Fred Taylor handled the bulk of the running, although neither had a good game. Taylor did get the ball at the goal line. Terrell Owens only had two receptions for 46 yards, and just doesn’t look like the same player he used to be.

Brett Favre only had a little over 100 yards passing on Sunday. Take this any way you want. Were the Vikings protecting him? Did they just decide not to pass because Running Back Adrian Peterson was able to beat the Browns all by himself? I’m thinking a little of both.

Anthony Gonzalez suffered a sprained knee ligament and will miss the next 2-6 weeks. As I’m writing this there are rumors that the injury is much worse and he could be out longer. Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon now move up the depth list.

If you drafted QB Drew Brees, you’re thrilled with his performance on Sunday. If you drafted one of his receivers, not so much. Sure Brees and the Saints love to throw, but they spread the ball around so much, it’s hard to tell who is going to have the big game from week to week.

So much for the Cowboys becoming a run first team as Tony Romo threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns against Tampa on Sunday. Dallas is still a very dangerous passing team and without TO, Romo spreads the ball around which could even make them more dangerous.

In the battle of rookie Quarterbacks, the Jets Mark Sanchez clearly outplayed the Lions Matthew Stafford. Sanchez looked poised and in control of the Jets offense as they upset the Texans, while Stafford had a rough day against the Saints going 16-37 for 205 yards and three interceptions. There had to be an extreme amount of pressure on Stafford as he had to know that the Saints were going to score quite a few points and it would be on him to keep pace with them.

Memo to the Arizona Cardinals, the season has started, time to show up and play. Kurt Warner and the Cardinals offense had a rough preseason, and that continued on into week one. Wide Receiver Steve Breaston was a late scratch and Anquan Boldin is still not 100%, but that still doesn’t seem to be much of an excuse for a passing offense that should be able to score points almost at will. The good news was that RB Tim Hightower was awesome in the passing game with 12 receptions for 121 yards, but only had 15 yards on eight rushes. Chris Wells is sure to get more and more playing time if Hightower can’t improve upon those rushing totals.

The Rams really are as bad as we thought they were. There just aren’t many threats on offense outside of RB Steven Jackson, and he can only do so much. Why he wasn’t involved in the passing game yesterday is a big question.

What a terrible game for Chicago on Sunday. Jay Cutler looked pretty bad and certainly not in sync with his receivers. They lose the game late when it looked like they could win it. Then they find out that All-Pro Linebacker Brian Urhlacher will be lost for the season with a dislocated right wrist. Cutler should get better, although he has to realize his cannon for a right arm doesn’t mean he can throw off his back foot all the time, but the Bears might want to get back to what was so successful last season, getting the ball into Running Back Matt Forte’s hands.

Continuing in our series of positional rankings, we will go over the Kickers. Now we all know, or at least should know, not to take a kicker until late in our draft. Trying to predict what kicker will score the most points is usually foolish. Sure you want a kicker on good offense, but not a great one because you want FGs, not XPs. In leagues that reward additional points for longer FGs, than you have to know the leg strength of your kicker. David Akers in Philadelphia is deadly inside the 40, but hit or miss from anything beyond. If for some reason you are going to draft more than one kicker, than pay attention to their bye weeks so that they don’t sit at the same time.

1. Stephen Gostkowski, New England Patriots: Best team, best chance to score points.

2. Rob Bironas, Tennessee Titans: Strong leg, definition of a team that might bog down offensively and be forced to settle for FGs.

3. David Akers, Philadelphia Eagles: Doesn’t have the leg strength anymore, but plays for a big offense and is money from inside 40.

4. Mason Crosby, Green Bay Packers: Explosive offense that could put up quite a few points. Weather in Green Bay late in the season could scare an owner.

5. Jason Elam, Atlanta Falcons: Another offense that will put up many a crooked number. Like Akers, doesn’t have the leg strength he used to, but the switch to playing at least eight games indoors makes up for that.

6. Nate Kaeding, San Diego Chargers: Cake schedule for the Chargers should lead to plenty of offensive opportunities.

7. Nick Folk, Dallas Cowboys: Dallas may miss the long touchdown passes to TO, but Folk could be the benefit of more time consuming drives that can’t quite reach the end zone.

8. Kris Brown, Houston Texans: Strong leg, good offense, plays in a dome, what’s not to like?

9. Ryan Longwell, Minnesota Vikings: Like so many other kickers, doesn’t have the leg strength he used to, but plays his home game indoors, his offense can move the ball, and he is reliable.

10. Adam Vinatieri, Indianapolis Colts: Almost left Vinatieri off this list due to his injuries this preseason.

11. John Kasay, Carolina Panthers

12. Shayne Graham, Cincinnati Bengals

13. Neil Rackers, Arizona Cardinals

14. Matt Prater, Denver Broncos

15. Jeff Reed, Pittsburgh Steelers

16. Robbie Gould, Chicago Bears

17. Josh Scobee, Jacksonville Jaguars

18. Olindo Mare, Seattle Seahawks

19. Josh Brown, St. Louis Rams

20. Rian Lindell, Buffalo Bills

21. Jason Hanson, Detroit Lions

22. Joe Nedney, San Francisco 49ers

23. Garrett Hartley, New Orleans Saints

24. Phil Dawson, Cleveland Browns

25. Sebastian Janikowski, Oakland Raiders

26. Steve Hauschka, Baltimore Ravens

27. Jay Feely, New York Jets

28. Lawrence Tynes, New York Giants

29. Dan Carpenter, Miami Dolphins

30. Shaun Suisham, Washington Redskins

31. Matt Bryant, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

32. Ryan Succop, Kansas City Chiefs

Next in our series of player rankings are the Wide Receivers. Generally I have not been a fan of drafting a WR any earlier than the third round, maybe late second round. This season however I believe WR is a weak position where the value is at the top and then gets considerably worse. I would have no problem drafting a WR in the second round, maybe even late first depending on how your draft goes.

1. Randy Moss, New England Patriots: I’m a big believer in Moss this season. QB Tom Brady is back and has something to prove. New England still does not have a true threat in the running game and will look to put the ball in the air in order to score points.

2. Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals: Quite possibly the best WR in the game, but with Anquan Boldin on the other side stealing opportunities and catches from him, I just can’t rank him first. Has big play ability and as long as QB Kurt Warner remains upright, will have a big season.

3. Andre Johnson, Houston Texans: In a PPR league, I might even have him second on this list, but either way you can’t complain about Johnson. He is just coming into his own now, and with WR Kevin Walter opposite him taking away constant double teams, Johnson seems to be getting better and better.

4. Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions: In a few seasons he may be the best WR in the NFL. At this point however you have to use caution when drafting Megatron. He is the only serious offensive threat on the Lions, and defenses will be drafting their coverages to stop him. Not to mention 1st overall draft pick Matthew Stafford may end up being the signal caller and he will need time to grow into the type of QB Detroit needs him to be.

5. Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts: Peyton Manning’s go to man in Indy. That alone justifies his positioning in the top five. Wayne should also benefit from the addition of Anthony Gonzalez across from him and the release of Marvin Harrison. Manning will now be looking for Wayne first on most reads, and will no longer feel the need to get the ball to Harrison.

6. Greg Jennings, Green Bay Packers: Jennings seems to fly under the radar of most fantasy teams, but he will produce for you. QB Aaron Rodgers is the real deal, and Jennings is his favorite receiver. Green Bay knows their points are going to come out of the passing game, and will put the ball in the air early and often.

7. Roddy White, Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons are loaded offensively at each skill position and WR is no different. With RB Michael Turner forcing the Safeties to play closer to the line of scrimmage, TE Tony Gonzalez controlling the middle, and Matt Ryan looking like the next superstar at QB, White is in for a huge season.

8. Steve Smith, Carolina Panthers: Smith has a shoulder injury as of this writing, but should be good to go come the regular season. Couple this injury with my worries about the arm strength of QB Jake Delhomme, and I have a tough time ranking Smith any higher than eighth. He is a dynamic player who can take the rock to the house at any point on

the field.

9. Marques Colston, New Orleans Saints: Colston could have a monster season playing in the pass happy offense of Sean Peyton and the Saints. He is playing for a QB in Drew Brees who is the number one QB overall on most draft lists and should be the first consideration on most of Brees reads. The thumb is healthy and Colston is ready to have his best season yet.

10. Terrell Owens, Buffalo Bills: Don’t be fooled by the name here and draft him too early. Bill QB Trent Edwards is not Jeff Garcia, Donovan McNabb, or Tony Romo and will not get the ball to TO as often as he would like. Also is below average at best and Edwards may not have the time to get the ball to TO deep. The toe injury that Owens suffered that will keep him out of at least two pre-season games can’t help either.

11. Anquan Boldin, Arizona Cardinals

12. Brandon Marshall, Denver Broncos

13. DeWayne Bowe, Kansas City Chiefs

14. Wes Welker, New England Patriots

15. Roy Willliams, Dallas Cowboys

Quarterbacks

1. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints: Brees led the NFL in passing yardage last season and will have WR Marques Colston for a full schedule this season. Saints Coach Sean Peyton likes to put the ball in the air and this should only lead to bigger and better numbers for Brees.

2. Tom Brady, New England Patriots: Maybe it’s just me but I think Coach Bill Belichick will want to prove to everyone that Brady is back and they will be airing it out plenty. Certainly doesn’t hurt to have Randy Moss and Wes Welker to throw to, and it’s not like the running game is anything special.

3. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts: Don’t let the release of WR Marvin Harrison scare you away from drafting Manning, he is still a top flight QB. Anthony Gonzalez should be more than an adequate replacement for Harrison and Reggie Wayne is still there to do the heavy lifting. Best bet is TE Dallas Clark actually becomes the number two WR in the Colts passing game.

4. Kurt Warner, Arizona Cardinals: You can certainly make an argument that Warner should be higher on this list. Question is, can Warner manage to stay healthy for a full season two years in a row? I’m not so sure of that, he is coming off of hip surgery this past off-season.

5. Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys: I’m a big believer in addition by subtraction so I have no problem with Terrell Owens no longer being a part of the Cowboys. Dallas still has plenty of offensive weapons in Roy Williams, Miles Austin, Jason Witten and the three headed monster at RB in Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice. Scoring shouldn’t be a problem in Big D.

6. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers: Rodgers is quickly becoming one of the elite QBs in the NFL and should be treated as such on your draft lists. If RB Ryan Grant can become a solid threat in the running game once again, this should only open up the passing game even further.

7. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons: Talk about an up and coming team that could be dangerous for years to come. You have RB Michael Turner, WR Roddy White, and TE Tony Gonzalez. They should be lighting up many a scoreboard.

8. Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia Eagles: The Eagles are loaded to make a run at the Super Bowl this season. Drafting WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy not only gives the Eagles more weapons on offense, but also provides insurance in case of injury.

9. Phillip Rivers, San Diego Chargers: The Chargers should cake walk to a division title. They may even be the favorite for home field advantage in the AFC. Rivers would be higher on this list for me but the Chargers may be blowing out a few teams and looking to run out the clock in the second half rather than padding their score.

10. Matt Schaub, Houston Texans: The only question with Schaub is, can he stay healthy? So far in his career, that answer had been, NO. With Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter to throw to, and Steve Slaten toting the rock, the pieces are there for a big season from Schaub.

11. Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears

Now that the NFL draft is over, I’m trying to digest the past several months with player releases, to player signings, to coaching changes, and how all of this will affect player production this coming season.
For instance, in Seattle will T.J.’s arrival to the Northwest have a greater impact on his numbers or [...]

Now that the NFL draft is over, I’m trying to digest the past several months with player releases, to player signings, to coaching changes, and how all of this will affect player production this coming season.

For instance, in Seattle will T.J.’s arrival to the Northwest have a greater impact on his numbers or quarterback Matt Hasselbeck? How about Deion Branch, how will this affect him or will he even be around?

When you look at the Cowboys after releasing Owens, you have to ask will Romo remain a top tier quarterback. How about Jason Witten, already arguably one of the best tight ends in fantasy, could his production take a greater leap? Then of course there is receiver Roy Williams, how good is he really?

There were a lot of significant injuries in 2008 that will play a big part in looking at player production in 2009. Is Tom Brady 100%, and can he return to his MVP form of 2007? And how about players like Reggie Bush, Earnest Graham, Darren McFadden, and Marques Colston, whose injury plagued 2008 season could have some owners overlooking them early in upcoming fantasy drafts.

With so many factors to consider for this coming fantasy season, has anything really changed all that much? Let’s take a look ahead at 2009 and here are my top selections for each of the following positions, QB, RB, WR, and TE.

Who’s Looking good for 2009….

Top QB:

There are just too many questions and considerations to take into account before you can just automatically assume Tom Brady will be king again. After his phenomenal run last season, hands down quarterback Drew Brees will at the top of everyone’s list at th quarterback position. Over the past two season Brees has just passed for over 9,400-yards and thrown 58 touchdowns, best of the best. With healthy support around him in 2009, he’ll have a shot at reaching big numbers once again.

Top RB:

At running back could be a little difficult, because there are a few versatile backs that if healthy could challenge, but then that might be the biggest difference. In his second season as a pro running back in the NFL the Viking’s Adrian Peterson played in all 16 games and rushed for over 1,750-yards to lead the league. Now he’s looking to bulk up a bit in 2009 and with some of the recent talk going around concerning a new arm under center, get ready for even more All-Day. He will be unanimously regarded as the best set of legs in just about every fantasy draft.

Top WR:

There is likely to be a lot of debate on this one, but despite seeing what he did in the post season, Larry Fitzgerald will be the second best receiver in 2009. Down in Houston there is quite a talented set of hands that belong to one Andre Johnson. As good as some of the others are in this league, there’s no receiver as dominant as Johnson was in 2008. Last season he led the league in both receptions as well as yardage. He also had double figure receptions in seven games, missing eight by one when he finished with nine catches back in Week 5. If Schaub can sustain his health for 2009, these two could become quite a tandem in 2009.

Top TE:

With Tony Gonzalez moving to Atlanta and Terrell Owens vacating Dallas, if there was a close gap between Tony G. and Jason Witten, it just may have gotten a little bit wider. Witten has clearly established himself as one of the best in this league, but with T.O. out he becomes the teams primary go-to receiver. Over the past two seasons Witten has averaged 88 receptions and five touchdowns. Without Owens around, expect similar if not better numbers from Witten, but he’ll easily improve the five touchdowns in 2009.

Just getting started…

With fantasy still a couple of months away, there’s going to be plenty to talk about leading up to drafts and the 2009 opening kickoff. But before I leave you with these four picks, let me make mention of a couple of names that I think could be big in 2009 and definitely worth watching;

Following a disappointing injury filled 2008, look for the Rams Steven Jackson to return to his 2006 form. In Cincinnati, if Carson Palmer is healthy and Chad “Ocho Cinco” can get his act together, both could have comeback seasons. Finally, in the Northwest another quarterback-receiver tandem could re-ignite in 2009. If Hasselbeck is over the injuries that plagued him last season, both he and receiver Deion Branch should benefit greatly from the arrival of T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Again, I am just getting started and we’ve got a long way to go before training camps even open.

Check back every week for more “Friday Football Diary”

The 2009 NFL draft has concluded with a few interesting results. Neither Anquan Boldin nor Braylon Edwards was traded. Lots of speculation throughout the week that one or both would go, but in the end, Boldin cost too much in picks and a new contract, and Edwards just wasn’t bringing back the value in picks that the Browns had sought.

The Lions had Matthew Stafford signed, sealed and delivered the night before the draft. They have what they are hoping is their quarterback of the future. Problem is then didn’t draft and lineman to protect him, so this could be a long painful year for Stafford if Detroit decided to, wait for it, throw him to the Lions, sorry, couldn’t resist.

The Jets made the big move on draft day of trading up 12 spots to nab Mark Sanchez. Not a surprise that the Jets wanted him, but it was a surprise that all they had to give up was a 2009 second round pick, and three players (Kenyon Coleman, Brett Ratliff, and Abram Elam). None of these are top players, but since Eric Mangini is the Head Coach of Cleveland and used to be the Head Coach of the Jets, he must’ve felt these players would help the team now. Still, one has to think the Jets committed some robbery here by not having to give up a first round pick in 2010.

It shouldn’t shock anyone that the Raiders made the most bizarre pick of the first round by taking Wide Receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, a big time reach with Michael Crabtree and Jeremy Maclin still on the board. You have to love Al Davis.

San Francisco is hoping they have solidified their Wide Receiver corps with the addition of Michael Crabtree.

Buffalo didn’t take an offensive lineman to replace the traded Jason Peters. They may have added Terrell Owens, but it won’t matter much if Trent Edwards is on his backside for most of the game.

How does Denver sign a half dozen free agent running backs, then draft a running back in the first round. Maybe Jay Cutler was right to get out of there after all.

With the price the Jets gave up to acquire Mark Sanchez, one has to be surprised that the Redskins couldn’t outbid them. They were crazy about Sanchez and seemed to desperately want him. Strange, now they don’t have Sanchez, and starting quarterback Jason Campbell knows that the organization doesn’t have much faith in him.

I know Jon Gruden was fired as the Head Coach of the Buccanneers, but apparently his philosophy lives on about not having enough quarterbacks on the roster with the addition of Josh Freeman.

The Cowboys had an absolute miserable draft. They didn’t add one player who will compete for a starting spot. It seemed their whole draft was designed to add special teams players. The only bright spot is the addition of kicker David Buehler. I know that sounds strange, but Buehler is a kickoff specialist who specializes in booting the ball into the end zone, a task that current Cowboy kicker Nick Folk couldn’t do once last season.

Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam
And the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word
And the skies are not cloudy all day

If T.O. doesn’t speak a discouraging word I’ll become a vegetarian and start watching Oprah! Sure it may not happen right away, he’ll try to be good, but there will come a game that he’ll not get the looks, and he’ll think Trent Edwards and Lee Evans are best buddies and the Trent doesn’t look for him while he’s open and it will go downhill from there. In the meantime bump Trent Edwards up a few notches. If you do end up with T.O. on your fantasy squad, there is a very good chance he will get off to a very fast start, especially if Marshawn Lynch get’s slapped with a suspension.

So go T.O. roam to the Bills, let em pay your bills, for the thrills and the pills that kill, oh but aint that America… little pink slips for you and me.

In a recent mock draft for 2009 (yes I know it’s way to early for that… wink wink) it was amazing to see some of the drastic changes that fantasy owners may expect to see in their 2009 drafts. L.T. didn’t drop as far as I thought he may considering he’s now had two straight injury riddled seasons and will be turning the dreaded 30 years old this offseason, was selected #5 in one draft and #2 in another. (Adrian Peterson was selected first in both)

Micheal Turner , Maurice Jones-Drew, DeAngelo Williams, along with rookie sensations Chris Johnson, Matt Forte and Steve Slaton are looking to be very popular high first round pick options in 2009.

For the WR’s Andre Johnson, Roddy White, and Calvin Johnson seem to be the top three favorites with FItgerald, Boldin, and Brandon Marshall right there in the mix, it’s only after these young guns that you see the name Moss, T.O., and Steve Smith. One of the mighty falls from grace is Torry Holt who fell so far in one draft that Dominique Hixon, and Malcom Floyd were both drafted ahead of him. In the small 8 team mock Holt wasn’t even selected.

You can bank on next years cheat sheets looking A LOT different from last years!
